CREST

The Center for Research in Economics and Statistics (CREST) is a Joint Research Unit (UMR) specializing in quantitative methods applied to the social sciences.
CREST is an interdisciplinary unit bringing together researchers and faculty members from the CNRS, the Groupe des Écoles Nationales d'Économie et de Statistique (GENES), the Department of Economics at École polytechnique, and the Social Sciences and Economics Department at Télécom Paris. Its activities are located both in the ENSAE Paris building on the campus of Institut Polytechnique de Paris in Palaiseau, and on the Ker-Lann campus of ENSAI in Rennes.
Structure and mission of CREST
CREST is organized into four research divisions: Economics, Statistics, Finance-Insurance, and Sociology. It is supported by the general secretariat responsible for the administrative management of all divisions.
Its primary scientific mission is to produce cutting-edge research aimed at improving our understanding of economic and social structures and their evolution over time. This ambition relies on a dual strategy:
- the study of mathematical models and statistical methods to shed light on economic and social phenomena;
- the application of these tools, combined with appropriate data, to address concrete economic, financial, and sociological issues.
CREST researchers enjoy academic freedom, a key driver of innovation. The research conducted spans a wide range, from fundamental theoretical work to practical applications. Even the most abstract studies are often motivated by real-world issues, while applied research is grounded in solid theoretical foundations. This integrated approach fosters innovation and ensures the strong societal relevance of CREST's work.
