Public policy, institutions and public economics

The department has developed recognised expertise in public policy, paying special attention to the political viability of reforms and their redistributive effects. Our researchers study tax systems, budget rules and the design of more effective education and social policies, combining economic theory with detailed data analysis. Many of them work closely with the Institut des Politiques Publiques (IPP) and contribute to public debate through bodies such as the Conseil d'Analyse Économique (CAE) and the French Economic Association (AFSE). Our collaboration with Interdisciplinary Centre for Defence and Security (CIEDS), a centre at IP Paris focused on security and decision-making, further strengthens our connection to concrete policy questions.

Political economy and policy design

A significant portion of our work focuses on integrating political economy considerations into policy design, aiming to develop policies that are not only economically viable but also politically feasible. By adopting a novel approach to political feasibility, this research stream endeavours to identify and rank reforms that can realistically be implemented, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical policy design and practical political constraints.

Taxation and economic policy

Our research has applied innovative approaches, such as the perturbation method, to the evaluation of tax reforms. this work extends beyond traditional analyses, offering tools to assess the impact of comprehensive tax policy changes, and has implications for understanding the labour market integration of women and optimal taxation theory.
