The PhD at the IP Paris Department of Economics and CREST

Students holding a Master's degree (or equivalent) can prepare a PhD in Economics or Sociology within the Department of Economics at IP Paris, as part of the Institut de Polytechnique de Paris Doctoral School (ED IP Paris)

Doctoral studies are one of the strategic and fundamental missions of the Department and CREST.

Attracting, hosting, and training a large number of talented and motivated PhD candidates from leading French and international institutions greatly contributes to disseminating our scientific culture and expertise.

A doctoral program essentially consists of preparing a research thesis, under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Doctoral candidates are also required to take a limited number of specialized courses, attend research seminars, and participate in the regular activities of the Department.

The standard duration of a PhD is three years, although extensions may be granted.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree (M2) or an equivalent international qualification. Admission of students currently in the second year of their Master's program is conditional upon obtaining the degree. Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact faculty members before applying to identify potential supervisors.

During their doctoral studies, students are affiliated with both the Department of Economics at IP Paris and CREST.

Admission to the PhD program is conditional upon securing funding. Several opportunities exist for French and international students, including:

  • Doctoral contracts;
  • CIFRE contracts funded by a private or public company (the doctoral student typically spends two days a week in the company) - please contact a potential PhD supervisor for more information.

All PhD opportunities at the Department of Economics and CREST are posted on the ADUM platform of  the ED IP Paris.
