China: are air conditioners at odds with climate ambitions?
22 Sep. 2025 - 22 Sep. 2025
Written by Patricia Crifo, Professor of Economics at École polytechnique and a specialist in environmental issues, the article examines the paradox between China’s rapidly expanding air-conditioning market and its climate ambitions. A study shows that Chinese households focus on upfront costs rather than long-term energy savings, resulting in roughly 7.5% higher energy consumption. To balance comfort and sustainability, the article calls for stronger efficiency standards and greater consumer awareness.
